Title: Men and Dreams in the Dhauladhar
Author: Kochery C. Shibu
My Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐.1
A hydel power project in the remote Himalayas, three people brought together by date. Nanda, an engineer from Kerala at the dam construction site, hiding from his past, from the law, torn between the love of his dear ones and the kalari code of revenge. Khushru, a youth displaced from his native village in kashmir, a gambit in the terror plot that threatens to blow up the dam, working as a labourer at the site. Rekha, a Kathak dancer at heart, a doctor by profession, arrives at the campsite as the consort of khushru. Each has a story to tell and a dream to realise. This book is about the aspirations of these people, with their cares and worried woven into the site life. The fury of nature and hardship of project life have no mercy for the weak and no time for the dead.
Firstly, I loved the cover, it looks so natural. I have never read a book with so many characters, this was my first and it was quite lengthy but I enjoyed. I loved the way the writer has described each character giving equal importance and value. The way he has connected all the characters is like a cherry on the top of the cake. ⠀
I personally loved that “He looked at the snow capped peaks of the Dhauladhar range. “Life is a daring adventure or nothing,” he thought he heard his Brennen English teacher’s word echo in the mountains. The snow-capped peaks were smiling; they seemed to say, “Rest, Nanda, Rest.” part at every end of the chapter. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
It has so much to offer if you read it thoroughly, I took long time because of the harsh reality inside the book, I guess this has been experienced or observed by the writer himself and he has perfectly described many sensitive issues which actually needs our attention. Like, all these constructions and project has so many harmful impacts not only on our environment but also on the people around and that is clearly described in this book including the troubles occuring in a project, how the labour force is affected and misused, how the area and people living in that area are exploited plus how nature keeps giving hints through the change in weather and other disasters but then such projects have no mercy for the weak, no time for the dead and no love for nature and it has been perfectly picturised in the book in form of words. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Talking about the characters, every character has something different and unique at the same time but there are three main characters, around which the book revolves and all three are struggling to the same extent at their level to fulfill their dreams but then to know what happened with these characters and their dreams and how are they connected and also about the terror plot, that it was successful or not? you will have to read this book.
Thanks to @menanddreamsinthedhauladhar for sending me this book for a honest review and here it is🌻
